Municipal wastewaters contain a wide range of contaminants, such as organics and man-made chemicals, which can easily off-set the environmental balance and affect the water quality of receiving water bodies. It consists of all wastewater generated in towns and cities which in turn mainly comprises of waste water from domestic households (toilets, kitchens, sinks, bathrooms, gardens, etc.) and rainwater. Activated carbon is used to treat municipal wastewater such that it can be safely released back into the environment or reused for other purposes. Normally, GAC filtrations or PAC-assisted membrane operations are mainly conducted as a tertiary treatment step to remove dissolved and refractory organic matter from secondary sewage effluent. GAC is also used to recycle and reuse the effluent of municipal wastewater treatment plants.
