Edible oils are derived from a variety of raw materials including palm, olive, groundnut, sunflower, cottonseed, coconut and rapeseed. The crude forms of oil extracted from the raw material have considerable amounts of colour impurities (such as tannins and anthocyanins) and organic toxins. Particularly a group of dangerous and carcinogenic compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mainly consisting of Benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), is typically present in the crude oil. Activated carbon can not only remove these PAHs but also reduce the colour and odour (mainly isopropyl methoxy pyrazine) impurities of the refined edible oils.
