Carbon-in-pulp is a slightly more complicated process. The ore is ground to fines and mixed with water and thickeners to form a pulp slurry. This pulp is then solubilized using sodium cyanide solution in a series of air-agitated leaching vessels, where the gold is leached out of the ore. The pulp is then passed through a series of 5-6 vessels containing granular activated carbon. The carbon flows countercurrent to the pulp in a staged manner. On the way, it adsorbs the complex and is later separated from the pulp by mesh screening.
